A visceral fat, that is, abdominal fat that involves the internal organs, is associated with health risks, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. As highlighted in a Verywell Health article, written by orthopedist Kristen Gasnick, coffee can help reduce abdominal fat. Understand how.
Coffee can accelerate metabolism
Coffee is rich in protein, a natural compound that stimulates the nervous system. Although coffee consumption is often associated with increased energy and alertness, caffeine stimulating effects also temporarily increase metabolism by up to three hours.
A faster metabolism means that your body uses calories more efficiently, even at rest, which contributes to fat loss over time.
Note that having a healthy diet and regularly practicing physical activity are essential to keep metabolism functioning smoothly.
Coffee can increase fat oxidation
Another beneficial effect of increased metabolism provided by black coffee consumption is the improvement of fat oxidation. Fat oxidation is the process of breaking fat molecules to be used as energy instead of being stored.
As black coffee caffeine stimulates the nervous system, epinephrine neurotransmitter levels increase.
Elevated epinephrine levels in the bloodstream signal fat cells to release stored fat molecules, making them available for breaking and use as energy.
As more fat is decomposed, less fat is stored, leading to fat loss over time.
Coffee may improve blood sugar regulation
Some research reports that drinking coffee can help lower blood sugar levels. However, this evidence is contradictory, since some studies suggest that it may, on the contrary, increase sugar levels.
Still, coffee is known to contain chlorogen, a compound that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that help decompose and process sugar.
When blood sugar levels are controlled, there is a lower probability that excess sugar is stored as fat, especially visceral fat in the abdominal region.
Coffee can improve physical performance
Some people drink coffee before training given its stimulating effects that can increase energy.
Coffee contains few calories
When consumed without added sugar, simple, coffee has few calories. Decreased calorie intake is an essential component for sustainable fat loss.
