“ O summer of 2026 was the hottest” in Spain since at least 1961, year from which there are comparable records, Aemet revealed in a statement.

“ The persistence of high temperatures was totally exceptional: Spain was 61 days under heat wave in 2026. It is more 20 days than the previous record, in 2022”, according to the same note.

The average temperature in Spain in June, July and August was 24.5 degrees centigrade (oC), plus 0.3oC than in 2025, which had so far the highest average recorded in the same quarter.

Aemet stressed that the average temperature in these months this year is 2,4oC higher than the average of the reference period (1991-2020) and that “the ten hottest summers [June, July and August] in the historical series took place in the 21st century” and that “seven of the hottest eight since 2015”.

In addition to the four heat waves that hit the continental territory of Spain and the Balearic Islands in June, July and August of this year, “full summer conditions extended” beyond this quarter and there was a “very high temperature episode in May and a heat wave in September,” Aemet also highlighted.

According to official data, the number of heat-related deaths in Spain this summer exceeded 5,100 between June 1st and August 31st and is a record since there are records.

According to the “MoMO” platform of the Carlos III Health Institute, which monitors daily mortality in the country, there were in June, July and August 5,111 deaths in Spain attributable to heat, exceeding 4,653 of 2022, the highest number in these three months so far.

Last year, there were 3,651 heat-related deaths in Spain between June 1 and August 31.

The platform has added daily data on mortality in Spain since 2015.

This summer, Spain was also affected by large forest fires, coinciding with weeks of high temperatures.

Since the beginning of the year, some 296,000 hectares have been burned in the country, according to the European EFFIS system.

In 2025, the fires calcined in Spain 393,000 hectares, in the largest burning area in a single year of registration in the country.
