A feeding plays a key role in cardiac health. As EatingWell reports, a study concluded that grapes and blueberries deserve attention, given their health benefits.
The study, published in Nutrientes magazine, sought to answer the question: is there evidence that the compounds of this fruit really benefit the heart?
How the study was conducted
The study consisted of a narrative review, that is, the authors gathered and summarized research already done to do a new research. They focused on studies with humans and specifically analyzed three types: meta-analyses, systematic reviews and randomized clinical trials.
The authors also controlled several factors, including blood pressure, endothelial function, that is, the ability of blood vessels to relax and respond, inflammation, arterial stiffness, among others.
What did the study find?
The results highlighted the benefits of the consumption of grapes and blueberries for heart health.
In the case of grapes, an analysis of 17 clinical studies found that ingestion of grape polyphenols at doses greater than 500 mg per day for at least 12 weeks was associated with a significant reduction in C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation.
Another review of 30 clinical trials found that the consumption of grapes was related to a reduction in systolic blood pressure.
With regard to blueberries, daily consumption of 150 grams (one cup) for six months was associated with improved endothelial function and arterial stiffness, with changes that the authors related to a predicted reduction of 12 to 15% in cardiovascular risk.
How does this apply to real life?
Based on these conclusions, it is advised to increase the consumption of grapes and blueberries. Include fruits rich in polyphenols, such as grapes and blueberries, in the diet is recommended.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that although they have many benefits, these fruits do not replace blood pressure medicines, serving only as a complete nutritional level.
That is, even though not preventing cardiovascular diseases alone, grapes and blueberries can play an important role in a healthy lifestyle for the heart.
