Sthe Department of Commerce announced in a letter to Anthropic that it was lifting restrictions on the use of Mythos 5 for a selected list of companies and federal departments after its use was suspended almost two weeks ago for national security reasons.
The letter does not explain what will happen to Model Fable 5, a less advanced version of Mythos, which was publicly available on Claude platform and also saw its suspended access.
“ I have determined that the necessary safeguards are in place to allow certain trusted partners to access Claude Mythos 5,” said American Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick in his letter.
According to the US Government, Anthropic demonstrated “significant progress” after several days of negotiations due to fears that the company’s most advanced models could be used in cyberattacks.
This news appeared on Friday, the same day OpenAI presented the new models GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna, also with limited access to partners approved by the U.S. Government.
In a statement, OpenAI opposed government approval to “become the long-term standard”, as this “privates users, programmers, businesses, cybersecurity professionals and global partners from the best tools”.
On 13 June, Anthropic suspended public access to the most advanced AI models in order to comply with an export control directive, which obliges it to prevent access to the service by foreigners for national security reasons.
According to Anthropic, in order to comply with the order to prevent access outside the United States or by foreigners within the country, he chose to block all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to all customers.
In a statement, Anthropic stated that the US Government did not provide specific details on why new artificial intelligence services are a national security problem and apologized to customers for the interruption.
“ As we have already stated publicly, we believe that the government should be able to block unsafe developments as part of a transparent, fair, clear and technical-based process. This action is not in accordance with these principles”, said the company.
The suspension occurred a few days after Anthropic made available to Claude service subscribers the Fable 5 model, presented as the most advanced in several skills tests and considered much superior to the Opus models.
