In a statement, LAM states that Embraer 190 named “Zambeze” starts operating on Monday under the brand Air Mozambique, making an inaugural flight between Maputo and Beira, in Sofala province, center of Mozambique.
The first of these two aircraft began to operate on Friday, as LAM advanced, making an inaugural flight between Maputo and Nacala, in the province of Nampula, becoming the first of two aircraft acquired by the company to enter into operation already bearing the new commercial designation Air Mozambique.
Rather, the Government pointed out that the introduction of the new Air Mozambique brand and the strengthening of the fleet are part of the LAM restructuring and recovery plan, which aims to increase operational efficiency, ensure financial sustainability of the company and improve the quality and regularity of the services provided to passengers.
Under the name Air Mozambique, the carrier presents a new visual identity associated with the company's transformation strategy, launched a year ago as a priority by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo.
In delivering the first aircraft under this brand, the Minister for Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, framed investment in the Government's strategy to strengthen mobility and economic and territorial integration of the country.
“ Mozambique is an extensive country, with its main centres of economic activity distributed across different regions. Therefore, the circulation of people, goods, services and production factors is a fundamental condition for the functioning of the economy”, Matlombe said, quoted in the statement.
The governor then recalled the challenges faced by the company in recent years, stressing that the recovery of the carrier required structural measures, including the reorganization of the company, cost control, improvement of management processes, rationalisation of operations and strengthening of operational capacity.
João Matlombe added that the recovery of LAM is not limited to the incorporation of new aircraft and should be accompanied by a deeper transformation of management and operation models: “Our goal is to create a company that is more efficient, financially sustainable and capable of providing regular, safe and quality service.”.
The operation of the two aircraft takes place in a phase of expansion of the company's fleet.
On Tuesday, the chairman of the management committee of LAM, Dane Kondic, stated that the company will count on 10 operational aircraft with the incorporation of the two Embraer 190, compared to the three aircraft that it had when the current administration took office, in May 2025.
“ Today we have two aircraft of our own in operation and six aircraft of partners flying, totaling eight. Two more aircraft, the new Embraer 190, will enter the fleet this week,” Kondic said in Beira.
According to the manager, the company expects to strengthen the fleet for 12 aircraft by the end of the year, considering that the increase in operational capacity is the main priority to improve internal connectivity in a country with large distances between the main economic centres.
LAM is undergoing a deep restructuring process, after several years marked by operational difficulties associated with the small size of the fleet and the lack of investment.
Under this process, Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB) acquired in 2025 a 25.2% stake in the capital of the carrier, while the Mozambican Insurance Company (Emose) and the Mozambican Railways (CFM) began to hold 15.4% each.
