George Lucas: Rejecting AI is like using horses instead of cars

The creator of the "Star Wars" saga, George Lucas, believes that trying to avoid using artificial intelligence tools in film productions is the same as continuing to use horses and wagons when there are cars.

Pmartin Scorsese is not the only one among the great directors and naturally see the use of Artificial Intelligence in the film industry. The creator of the "Star Wars" saga, George Lucas, also recently advocated the use of this technology in film productions.

More precisely, Luke considers it inevitable that artificial intelligence tools are increasingly integrated into the film production process and even compared technology with the appearance and greater popularization of cars in the early twentieth century.

In conversation with site The Rabbit’s Foot, Lucas began by explaining that this is a discussion that has already been taken in the past with the entry into the scene of digital format and abandonment of film footage. Although he is part of entities dedicated to the preservation of ancient films, Luke considers absurd positions taken by directors who say they will never stray from film.

“It’s a moving image. That's what it is. It’s not technology, it’s an idea”Luke explained, noting that this same philosophy applies to the way Artificial Intelligence is being viewed.

“Artificial Intelligence means it will be much easier for us to make movies”, said Lucas. “It’s like me sitting here saying: ‘Well, I believe the horse and the wagon represent the future. These cars break down, they need fuel, there's all sorts of problems with them and soon they'll make tanks and people will be killed. It's horrible. Not anything you can do about it. It is progress, it is the future”.

What does Martin Scorsese say?

Director Martin Scorsese – responsible for films such as “All Good Boys”, “Taxi Driver”, “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “The Departed”, “Assassins of the Moon of Flowers”, “Shutter Island”, among many others – seems to be in favor of the use of technology in cinema.

According to The New York TimesScorsese joined Black Forest Labs (a startup focused on artificial intelligence models that allow image generation) as a partner and consultant.

The reason, according to Scorsese himself, is that he himself is using technology to create ‘storyboards’ during the pre-production phase to communicate more effectively his vision to the teams he works with.

“I’ve been creating my own storyboards for 70 years”, explained Scorsese, noting that he can better explain what he wants using Artificial Intelligence, especially photography directors, production designers and also art directors. For the director, the use of Artificial Intelligence at this stage of production allowed him to accelerate the process.
