“About 100 flights scheduled for the entire weekend were cancelled in advance,” and “alternative options” were offered to customers, such as “the possibility of a free transfer to another flight,” a spokesperson for the British airline told AFP.

According to the French news agency William Bourdon, representative of the SNPNC-FO union, “the strike has a lot of support”, specifying that 68% of the approximately 340 flight attendants deployed for this weekend joined the stoppage, with variations according to the regional base.

Information about flights on EasyJet’s website shows “at least 98 flights cancelled during the weekend, including 47 on Saturday and 51 on Sunday,” representing “more than half of scheduled flights,” the union leader stressed.

On Friday, the official carrier source told Lusa that six return flights were cancelled between France and Portugal during the weekend.

EasyJet operates at Charles de Gaulle and Orly Parisian airports as well as Lyon, Nantes, Bordeaux and Nice.

The strike, supported by the three representative unions of cabin staff – SNPNC-FO, UNAC-CFE-CGC and UNPNC-CFDT – was convened after the failure of negotiations with the management on working conditions.

“ Our main claim is for stable times. For example, on a basis such as Lyon, some flight attendants will have 50 or up to 60 hours per week,” William Bourdon explained, pointing out that on that basis the strike is taking on 80% of crew members.

This halt is part of a call by the unions for the period from August 7 to September 2, so new strikes may occur in the coming weeks.

In France, EasyJet has several thousand workers, of whom a significant part is cabin crew.

France is one of the main markets of the carrier in continental Europe, where the UK company has expanded its activities in recent years.

In a statement sent to AFP on Wednesday, EasyJet called on the unions to “leave this opportunist action at such a crucial period of the year” as the busy weekend of August 15.

The company claimed to have presented “proposals for adjustments” in order to meet the demands of the unions, stressing that negotiations are scheduled for September.
