O american musician and actor Jared Leto rejected the charges of sexual abuse, assault and harassment against him by several women, who were minor at the time of the alleged facts.
“ I've never sexually assaulted anyone in my life. These allegations are absolute and categorically false”, said, in a short statement released on Wednesday evening and quoted by several American media.
Jared Leto, lead singer of the Thirty Seconds to Mars, is accused of sexual abuse, assault and harassment by several women in a BBC documentary that premiered on Wednesday.
Four of the women heard in “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Darkest Secret” (“Jared Leto: The Dark Secret of Hollywood, free translation into Portuguese), accuse the artist of “criminal sexual conduct”, having the alleged facts occurred between 2002 and 2016.
At the time, the musician and actor, who is now 54, would be between 30 and 40 years old and the alleged victims were teenagers.
One of the women reported being sexually assaulted in a motel bathroom when she was 17. Another said Jared Leto threatened her with sexual assault after unexpectedly being alone with the artist in a hotel room when he was 19.
A third woman shared having had a sexual relationship with the vocalist of the Thirty Seconds to Mars when she was 17, which in the U.S. state of California is legally classified as a minor rape.
Another woman reported being manipulated by Jared Leto when she was 16, claiming that the actor used fame to make several calls to explicit sexual content.
This woman was later sent a confidentiality agreement, which would prevent her from talking about her relationship with the artist. The BBC claims to have had access to the document, which the woman refused to sign.
In addition to these, four more women reported having received “strange telephone calls and often of a sexual nature by Leto when they were younger.”.
In total, ten women shared their stories with the BBC.
The British public station guarantees that it has seen photos and messages that corroborate the stories told by women, and that the testimonies were confirmed by their friends and family.
In addition to the alleged victims, the documentary includes testimony from two people who worked with Jared Leto's band.
The charges made public with the BBC documentary are joined by others released in June last year by American online publication Air Mail.
At the time, nine women accused Jared Leto of inappropriate sexual conduct when they were teenagers, with some classifying their behavior as “predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.” The artist denied the charges.
Jared Leto became known as an actor in the 1990s in the television series "My So-Called Life", starring Claire Danes.
In the film, he joined the cast of films such as “The Dallas Club”, which earned him an Oscar for Best Actor, “Mr. Nobody”, “Morbius” and “Suicide Squad”.
In 1998, Jared Leto founded, with his brother Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevice, the Thirty Seconds to Mars.
The band, which edited the debut album, “30 Seconds to Mars”, in 2002, has performed several times in Portugal, both in festivals and in concerts on their own behalf.
The most recent concert took place in July last year at the Marés Vivas Festival in Vila Nova de Gaia.
The band is expected to return to Portugal next year for a concert in Lisbon at MEO Arena on April 6, under the tour “A Beautiful Lie vs This Is War”.
