O JPP today argued that the Madeira budget for 2027 should include VAT reduction and measures to promote the construction of public housing, as well as support for banana growers and funds for a port ramp.
“ We believe that the Government [PSD/CDS-PP] should consider approving these four proposals,” said the leader of Together for the People (JPP), Elvio Sousa, saying that in total the party will present about 20 measures to include in the Budget.
The leader spoke to journalists after an audience with the Regional Secretary of Finance, Duarte Freitas, in Funchal, in preparation for the proposal for the Budget of the Autonomous Region of Madeira for 2027.
The insular ruler receives representatives of the six parties with a seat in the regional parliament today, having already heard IL, CDS-PP, Arriga and PS being still scheduled a meeting with the PSD, which supports the executive in coalition with the CDS-PP.
“ It is time to lower VAT [Tax on Added Value], minus 3 percentage points [at the general rate of 22%]. It is beneficial for families and companies ", said Elvio Sousa.
As far as housing is concerned, the JPP proposal aims to establish programme contracts with municipalities with land grants to build public housing.
In relation to banana growers, Élvio Sousa defends the fixing of the extra banana price at 1.36 euros/kilogram, considering that it represents a significant gain, given the current price charged (1 euro).
On the other hand, the JPP considers that the Regional Government should plan the construction of a new port ramp, given the possible entry into operation of a ferry link of passengers and goods between Madeira and the mainland, which says it is a “political will of all”.
Together For The People is the largest party of the Madeiran opposition, with 11 deputies in a total of 47 that make up the Legislative Assembly.
The Madeira budget in force this year, amounting to EUR 2,329 million, was approved on December 17, 2025, in a final vote overall, with the votes in favour of the PSD/CDS-PP majority, against JPP, PS and Arrive and abstaining from IL.
The Investment Plan of the Government of Madeira, amounting to 1,002 million euros, was also approved by a majority, with the votes in favour of PSD/CDS-PP, against the PS and the abstention of JPP, Achega and IL.
