O prime Minister today expressed pride in the work carried out by the executive PSD/CDS-PP so far, arguing that “seeds are already bearing fruit”, but also praised the “culture of dialogue” that has allowed to build majorities.
In the opening of the debate in general of the proposal for a State Budget for 2027, at the Assembly of the Republic, Luís Montenegro devoted half the 30 minutes he spent to talk about housing policy.
On the OE2027, the head of the government classified it as “a good budget for families and companies” and took advantage of it to make a brief assessment of the PSD/CDS-PP executives who have been leading since April 2024.
“ I'm very proud of our country. Pride in the trajectory we have made, in the options we have taken, in the work we have done ", said.
Montenegro considered that “the fruits are already beginning to appear” of the “seeds launched” by its executives and, saying that it does not want to commit “the displeasure of comparing Portugal with European partners”, has highlighted the best national results in various parameters.
“ I will not compare our deficit, I will not compare the growth of our economy. I will not compare the effectiveness of our migration policy. I will not even compare political stability and social peace with countries that are reference in Europe. I'm not going that way. For me and for the Government, Portugal is worth by itself ", said.
On the other hand, Montenegro expressed, “with a democratic sense”, also “priority in the culture of dialogue that will allow to build majorities and move forward”, in a parliament in which PSD and CDS-PP have only 91 of the 230 Members.
Montenegro listed “some facts” to support the defense of the State Budget for 2027, such as the forecast of a surplus and a further fall in the state debt.
“ At a time of global uncertainty, there is no better service we can provide to the country and the new generations. Make sure the accounts are fair and right. Ensure that the accounts are safe and that we can finance ourselves at more affordable prices ", sustained.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the new descents of the IRS and IRC provided in the document, assuming that they are “an ideological option”.
“In this government, we really believe that families manage their money better than the state. And we believe that the economy grows more if the State does not charge so many taxes to workers and companies ", said.
Montenegro argued that, with this budget, the purchasing power of the Portuguese will increase next year, despite rising inflation, and stressed that all measures to support young people will be maintained and aid to the elderly will be strengthened.
The revitalization of the Portuguese Fomento Bank and the fight against bureaucracy were other merits attributed by Montenegro to the government's proposal.
“A budget that reduces debt while reducing taxes. A budget that relieves families while investing in public services and territory. A budget that takes care of the weakest at the same time as it clears the way for merit and work”, he summed up, ensuring that, with the OE2027, “Portugal will not stop”.
The document, which will be voted on Wednesday, has viability generally guaranteed by the already announced abstention of the PS.
