Omunicipalities are “available and motivated” to help the state increase the supply of public housing and currently work with entities to reprogram the priorities of Portugal2030 and to accelerate bureaucracy, said ANMP today.

In statements to Lusa, at the end of a meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), in Mourão, in the district of Évora, the president of the association, Pedro Pimpão, stressed that “there is, in fact, from the point of view of the proposal of the State Budget [to 2027], a reinforcement of the funds intended for housing”, an area that “is a concern” for municipalities.

“ We have made this commitment to help the Portuguese State increase public housing in our country, in our municipalities. And, therefore, this strengthening of funds that may exist, either by the European Investment Bank [EIB] line, or by other mechanisms, particularly in Portugal2030, that will help us increase the public response in the housing park, we are available and we are motivated for this purpose,” he said.

Pedro Pimpão stressed that ANMP advocates “the strengthening of funds intended exclusively for housing and, in particular, for housing with controlled prices”.

It also advocates “a greater agility and simplification of processes” so that these procedures, being faster, achieve the goal of “creating conditions to increase public housing in the country”.

Pimpão stressed that the municipalities are currently working with responsible entities in this area, in particular with the IHRU (Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation), but also with regional development committees, within the framework of the reprogramming of Portugal’s priorities 2030 and also so that the procedures “be as quick as possible”.

“ All the amendments that come to debureaucratise and simplify the process are welcome”, he stressed.

The mayor also stressed that the Portuguese municipalities have been responsible for the bulk of public investment at national level, being “at this time responsible for 40% of public investment at national level in the area of health, education and housing”.
