O new trial, whose date is not yet set, will examine the defendant's guilt, Marius Borg Hoiby, 29 years, the duration of the sentence and compensation to the victims.

The appeal lodged by the sentence determined in June was accepted by the Borgarting Court of Appeal, the largest in the country.

“The Court of Appeal shall immediately initiate preparations for the case. The date of the hearing is not yet defined and it is not possible, at this time, to say when it will occur”, the court said in a statement.

Hoiby, son of Queen Mette-Marit's previous marriage to Haakon VIII, was sentenced to four years in prison in the first instance by 34 out of 39 charges, including two violations, mistreatment, assault, threats, possession of cannabis, violation of restraining orders and serious traffic offences.

He was also ordered to pay a total of NOK 640,000 (about EUR 58,000) in compensation to four victims.

The young man, who admitted to having problems with alcohol and drugs, has been in protective custody since February, as the court believes he can try to contact one of his victims and violate the restraining order, as he did in the past.

Since July, Norwegian law has allowed him to carry out his pre-trial detention under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.

Hoiby, who is not a member of the royal family, must remain in his residence unless he needs to go out to work, study, receive medical treatment or consultations related to diseases.

The young man was allowed to attend the funeral of King Harold V, father of the stepfather and current King, who died on August 28, at the age of 89.
