Ostainless steel appliances are usually a central part in the most modern kitchens. However, despite all its beauty, the truth is that keeping them clean and unmarked can be an arduous task.

Experts have revealed to Martha Stewart’s website the right – and wrong – ways to clean stainless steel and how to keep it flawless between cleanings.

Start by cleaning in the direction of fiber

Like natural wood, stainless steel has a subtle and directional texture. According to Samantha Shpeen, director of products for the home of the Cleancult sustainable cleaning brand, following this texture is the secret to getting a spotless finish.

“The secret is to clean in the direction of fiber and not the other way around,” he explained.

“ Start with a soft microfiber cloth and a neutral pH cleaning product – aggressive or very oily chemicals can cause stains. Spray lightly, clean with long and uniform movements, following the direction of the steel and then pull the gloss with a clean cloth”.

This simple step, that is, cleaning in the direction of the fabric fiber instead of making circular movements, will make all the difference.

The method with two cloths is the most effective: one for cleaning and the other for drying.

Avoid aggressive cleaning products

Among the most common reasons for stainless steel to lose its brightness is the use of inappropriate products. “Avoid anything abrasive, such as wire mop, rough sponges or powder cleaning products – these scratch the surface,” says Shpeen.

“ Also avoid bleach, ammonia or high alcohol sprays, which can leave the finish opaque. Once damaged, the fingerprints and stains become even more visible”.

Although these components promise deep cleaning, they often cause more damage than benefits. Over time they can even remove the protective layer that gives the stainless steel its characteristic shine.

Once this finish is compromised, even the lighter touch can leave marks. Prefer soft microfiber cloths and water-based detergent with neutral pH.

Remember: Less is more!

When it comes to cleaning up stainless steel, Shpeen claims that most of people's mistakes stem from excessive force. “Aggressive scrubbing can cause risks that reflect light and leave the surface stained.” Instead of rubbing, let the cleaning product act.

Prevince fingers before they appear

“ Fingerprints are formed when the oiliness of the skin comes into contact with the smooth surface of the steel,” Shpeen explains. “So prevention is fundamental.”.

“ After cleaning, pull the gloss with a dry microfiber cloth and a few drops of mineral oil for a light and protective shine ", adds. “A quick daily cleaning with a gentle cleaning product prevents stains from piling up and reducing the need for deep cleaning”.

Other important tips:

Keep your hands clean: waste lotions or oils transfer easily, so wash and dry your hands before handling the refrigerator doors;

Install handles: The less you touch the surface, the longer it stays clean;

Have a microfiber cloth nearby: hang one inside a kitchen cabinet for quick daily touches;

Change the cleaning cloths frequently: dirty cloths can reapply the fat instead of removing it, so change them regularly.
