A Maritime police revealed this Tuesday that they rescued 44 migrants on a beach on the island of Gavdos, Greece. The rescue took place under the mission “Joint Operation (OJ) Greece 2026”.
“Following a request from the Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG), 44 men were rescued and transported safely to the port of Karave, where they were landed and delivered to the Hellenic authorities,” the National Maritime Authority (AMN) indicated in a statement.
According to the AMN, the Maritime Police is integrated into the joint operation mission Greece 2026, coordinated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), in support of the Hellenic Coast Guard, “contributing to the surveillance of the European Union’s external maritime border, European operational cooperation and the safeguarding of human life at sea”
Third rescue in Gavdos in just two days
This was the third rescue of migrants by the Maritime Police in Greece in just two days.
On Sunday afternoon, the Maritime Police announced the rescue of 43 other immigrants, who were isolated on a beach on the island of Gavdos.
After the rescue, these immigrants were also transported by the Maritime Police to the port of Karave, where they waited by the competent authorities.
Later, during the night, AMN revealed that the Maritime Police rescued 35 more immigrants who were on a vessel south of the island.
The vessel was intercepted following a request for intervention by the Greek authorities, and immigrants were “later transported to the port of Karave, where they waited for the competent authorities”.
