O Group EDA – Electricity of the Azores concluded another stage in the modernization of the wind farm of Figueiral, in Santa Maria, with the entry into service of three new wind turbines, which will strengthen the production of renewable energy.

With the three new 900 kW wind turbines installed on the island of Santa Maria, in an investment fully supported by EDA Renováveis’ own capital (the company of the EDA Group dedicated to renewable energy), the company said in a statement that “strengthens the production of renewable energy and the energy autonomy of the Azorean island electrical systems”.

The project represents the latest phase of a journey started in 1988, when the first wind farm of the Azores, the second one built in Portugal, then equipped with eight wind turbines of 30 kW, is read.

Over the years the facility has experienced several phases and, almost four decades later, technological evolution “allows it to have significantly more powerful, efficient and prepared equipment to meet the specific requirements of island electrical systems”.

According to the note, the three new wind turbines incorporate advanced features of network support during electrical disturbances, “contributing to greater stability, operational flexibility and integration of renewable production into the electroproducer system” of the island of Santa Maria, in the Eastern group of the Azores.

Two wind turbines entered production on Wednesday and the next day, currently running the operational tests and final adjustments of the control, control and supervision systems, a process that precedes the entry into full operation.

The EDA Group has shown that the entry into service of these new wind turbines represents “another firm step” in the commitment to the energy transition of the Azores.

“ This project demonstrates that it is possible to combine technological innovation, appreciation of internal skills and strengthening the security and sustainability of the regional electric system ", said, indicating that it is also the result of almost four decades of learning, investment and dedication.

With the Figueiral Wind Farm in full operation, the EDA estimates “an annual savings for 2027 of about one million and three hundred thousand liters of diesel fuel, contributing to a significant increase in the incorporation of renewable energy in the island of Santa Maria”.

“ The wind component in 2027 is expected to represent about 21% of the island’s electricity production, which adds the contribution of photovoltaic production by about 4%, with the estimated total contribution of renewables reaching 26% that year”, he admitted.

The EDA plans to install a fast reservation system based on lithium batteries to increase the penetration of renewables into the island of Santa Maria, “based solely on intermittent resources, contributing to the strengthening of energy autonomy in the Azores”.

It also intends to “enhance the installation of more renewable production through competitive competition procedures under the new legislation in force”.

Asked by Lusa about the value of the investment made, the company replied that “the amount of investment associated with the project is commercially sensitive information and will not be disclosed.”.
