Cerca of 50 people participated today, at the end of the afternoon, in a concentration in Évora for the right to housing, in which shouted slogans of order, capturing the attention of some tourists who passed by the Square of Giraldo.
Some of the phrases, sung by those who took turns on the megaphone and assistance, were “Houses to live, not to strangle” or “Montenegro listens, your houses are for housing”, Lusa said on site.
Starting at 6:15 p.m., concentrated next to the promotional swing of the European Capital of Culture (CEC) Évora 27, in Giraldo Square, considered the ‘visiting room’ of the city, participants exhibited a range, eight meters long.
“Peace, Bread, Housing, Health and Education”, could be read in the band, painted by an artistic collective that has been conducting an artistic residence in Évora, in the association Pó de Vir a Ser.
These slogans were also sung by the protest participants, who ended up saying “the Alentejo wants revolution”.
The concentration attracted the attention of tourists passing by the Plaza do Giraldo, national and foreign, leading some to take a few minutes while taking advantage to see what it was and take some photographs.
Gradually, after several interventions using the megaphone and some songs, the participants began to disperse, around 7:10 p.m.
According to the participants, the protest for affordable housing returns to the streets of Évora next Friday at 6 p.m., also in Giraldo Square.
Between demonstrations and so-called camped demonstrations, with hundreds or thousands of protesters, the current protests against the housing crisis began in Porto on October 10 and expanded to Lisbon, but they have also motivated concentrations in other cities, days after the parliamentary approval of the new rental law, now under discussion in the specialty.
The initiatives, promoted by civic movements and spread across social networks, demand measures that respond to the crisis in the sector, the control of the prices of essential goods and fuels and defend taxes on the extraordinary profits of large companies in the banking sector.
On October 15, the protesting movement in Porto, with a camp, denounced a violent police charge during the early hours that caused injuries in 39 of the participants, two of whom were in a serious state, and in a police officer. In Lisbon, the authorities removed dozens of Rossio tents early in the morning of Tuesday and held 55 demonstrators, who will be present to judge on 27.
Protest promoters promise to stay on the streets.
