A Syria has today transmitted to Jordan its reserves for the Jordanian aviation bombings in the south of the country, which have left at least six dead and four wounded, and has announced closure of the border with that country.

“ We informed our brothers in Jordan of our absolute reservations about the execution of operations in Syrian territory without prior coordination,” the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued by the Syrian official news agency SANA.

Shortly after this announcement, the Syrian border and customs authority announced the closure of the Nassib post, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side, “due to current circumstances”, and suspended all “passenger and commercial traffic in both directions”.

This was the main border post in southern Syria and Jordan.

Jordan's deadly attacks on Syrian territory are presented by Amman as retaliation for a terrorist attack on a church last week.

On the note issued today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sirius lamented the victims of Jordan's operation which, according to the Health Directorate of the southern province of Deraa, amounted to ten: six dead, including three children and one woman, and four injured of various severity.

“ We maintain constant communication and coordination with the Jordanian side to clarify the details and causes of this incident, in order to address its repercussions and to preserve the security and sovereignty of the Syrian territory,” he added.

It also stressed the importance of “joint coordination on the ground and on security for any border area measure” to “save the stability of both countries”.

The Syrian stance arises after the Royal Jordan Air Force bombarded several positions in southern Syria on Tuesday (as early as Tuesday in Syria), linked to “terrorist organisations” as reprisal for the attack perpetrated on Friday during a funeral in a Karak church in western Jordan, which caused at least nine deaths and about forty wounded.

According to an official statement from the Jordanian Army, reproduced by the official news agency Jordana Petra, the bombings destroyed several sites of these organizations, which they did not identify, and caused death and injury to many of its members, in addition to destroying several vehicles.

The air operation took place a few hours after the Jordanian authorities reported the arrest of the three alleged perpetrators of the attack in Karak, who belonged to the same family, after a confrontation with the security forces.

Jordan’s Public Security Director Obedalah al Maayta previously stated at a press conference that the crime had not been planned and that the three individuals, who share an extremist ideology, decided to perform it spontaneously when they were near the funeral procession.

Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen al Faraya then warned that the arrests would not put an end to the operation and ensured that the state would continue to investigate to clarify all the circumstances of the attack.

The attack took place on Friday afternoon, when several armed individuals invaded the courtyard of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Karak during a funeral ceremony attended by Christians and Muslims, and shot indiscriminately at those present.

Three people, including a leader of Hurras al-Din, died in a drone attack on a road near Damascus, according to the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
