A CP – Train Portugal is conducting connectivity tests with Starlink, by Elon Musk, to improve the Internet in Alfa Pendular.
Contacted by Lusa on the subject, official source of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing explained that Starlink “was selected at this stage for its technological maturity and availability for tests in the rail context.”.
This is an experimental pilot project, “focused on assessing the contribution of satellite connectivity to the on-board service,” the same source stressed.
“The CP monitors other technological solutions, including European ones, whose maturity and availability will be considered in the future, with the aim of ensuring a diversified and resilient approach,” he added.
The tests of this pilot project “have an estimated duration of 4 to 6 months, a period considered appropriate to validate the solution and its impact on the customer experience”.
This duration “can be adjusted according to the need to collect data under different operating conditions, ensuring a robust assessment of the quality, stability and continuity of connectivity,” he added.
The pilot project “has an approximate cost of EUR 30 thousand, including installation, equipment, data and monitoring”.
CP is conducting experimental satellite connectivity tests on one of Alfa Pendular trains to provide faster and more reliable Wi-Fi service on board during the journey.
The technology uses satellite communication antennas in addition to the current on-board communications system, which is supported by national mobile networks.
The solution enhances the internet connection in areas where mobile coverage is more limited, significantly improving the digital experience of passengers on board.
