The most accounted version of the console, with 512GB of memory, costs 1,039 euros. If you want this option from Steam Machine, but with a command, the price increases to 1,108 euros: which in practice means you will be paying 69 euros for a command that is normally on sale for 99 euros.
The 2T version of memory is on sale for 1,359 euros, increasing to 1,428 if you decide to buy with the command (which will again be less than 30 euros from your original price).
On the same page, valve also decided to leave a note explaining why console prices – much higher than initially thought.
“ When we started looking for components suppliers for Steam Machine in 2023, we thought we had a good sense of how these costs could change over time,” the company said. “This notion was based on the many years of data we all have on the evolution of PC hardware prices: mainly, it tends to get cheaper with time as new technologies arrive,” he explained.
However, “over the past year, this notion has changed rapidly and significantly, more visibly in relation to RAM and storage components”. That is why “our initial goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable.”.
In addition to the increase in component prices, Valve also noted that at certain times it was no longer able to obtain the parts it needed for the construction of the console, which consequently led the company to produce less units than expected for the launch.
Therefore, and in order to limit the activity of resellers (which would further increase prices), Valve decided to apply a reservation system for Steam Machine. Since Monday it is possible to register to obtain the console (with or without command and 512GB or 2T), and the registration deadline only ends on Thursday, June 25 at 18h in Lisbon.
At that time, the system will randomly choose the reservation order and the waiting list. As the units are available for shipping, buyers with booking orders will receive an email to finalize the purchase, with the first consoles to be sent from Monday, June 29.
Whoever has been on the waiting list will receive an email as soon as more Steam Machines are ready to upload.
