Find out how to check your social security discounts

Social Security discounts are important for the calculation of the pension, but not only – they are also important to measure how much you receive, for example, unemployment benefit or sickness benefit.

“ Over the course of working life, the remuneration declared to Social Security is recorded in the contribution career and may be relevant for the access and calculation of social benefits, such as old age pension, unemployment benefit or sickness benefit”, explains the blog Salto do Santander.

According to the same platform, “consulting this information regularly helps to identify incorrect or missing periods or remuneration, especially after changing jobs or when the records do not correspond to your receipts”.

Consulting these values can be done online through the Direct Social Security website. To do this, you must follow these steps:

  1. Click Sign in and login to the Portal;
  2. Access to Work>Remunerations and contributions> Contributory career> Consult contribution career;
  3. A page with two sections is available: Career overview: contains the timeline of the social security contribution career; Consultation of career periods: contains the number of years with a wage record in Social Security;
  4. Click Query Career: On this page appear the years with registered wages.

The blog Salto explains that “in the case of the general employees covered by the general scheme, the overall contribution rate is 34.75%”, and of this value:

  • 11% corresponds to the employee's contribution
  • 23.75% corresponds to the employer's contribution.

“ This does not mean that 34.75% of the worker's salary is deducted. The share of 11% is discounted on the employee's remuneration, while the 23.75% are supported by the employer ", can be read.
