Sand is aware of what has been released by Netflix is likely to have already passed the eye by “Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea”, a documentary that is currently among Netflix’s most viewed films in more than 25 countries and that in Portugal is currently in second position.
The documentary in question is about the sinking of the Costa Concordia, one of the biggest maritime disasters of recent years in Europe and which resulted in the death of 32 people. The case became so mediatic that Costa Concordia was even called “Modern Titanic”.
More than 4,000 people entered the Costa Concordia on 13 January 2012 for what should be a peaceful cruise trip through the Mediterranean but that night, Captain Francesco Schettino decided to change the route and approach the island of Giglio for a salute with the horn of the ship.
This route shift turned out to be the first of many wrong decisions, with Costa Concordia hitting the underwater rocks, which turned the following hours into a survival operation.
This documentary uses exclusive interviews with the survivors, where the survivors report all the moments of the disaster while actual images of the evacuation and archive recordings are shown.
In addition to the entire evacuation process and attempt to save as many passengers as possible, “Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea” also evaluates the implications that the disaster has had at international level. Moreover, the documentary also shows the convictions of those who were held responsible for the accident – including Captain Schettino, who in February 2015 was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
“Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea” premiered on Netflix on July 10 and is available exclusively on the streaming service.
