A The European Union (EU) today condemned the “cruel attack” on a church in the province of Al Karak, Jordan, which caused at least seven deaths and 34 injuries, and expressed its support for the investigation.
“ Our thoughts are with the victims and their families in these difficult moments. We express our solidarity with the people and Government of Jordan,” said a spokesman for the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, in a statement.
Furthermore, that spokesman indicated that the EU “offers its full support for the security investigation being conducted by the Jordanian authorities”.
The Jordanian Interior Minister, Mazen al Faraya, today attributed the “terrorist attack” against a church in Hamud to “a group of extremists”, who did not identify.
The authorities condemned this “unprecedented” action against the Christian community, which the king of Jordan, Abdalah II, classified as “terrorist act”.
These events are unusual in Jordan, which has a population of about 11.5 million, mostly Muslims, while approximately 3% are Christians.
However, there have been some incidents related to shootings in recent years, while security forces frequently carry out operations against smuggling drugs and weapons from neighbouring countries.
