Caware that history and polls are not in your favor this election season, the Republican National Committee is strongly betting on the President and Vice President of the United States to push voters out of the house and vote on November 3, in order to protect their majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Preparing ground for a post-Trump era, J.D. Vance will assume the leading role of this second and final night of the convention with a prime time speech.
Vance hasn't confirmed whether he's running for the White House and Trump hasn't appointed a successor yet.
However, and after a speech of almost two hours on the first night of the event, it will still belong to veteran Donald Trump the last word, in which it is expected to give a final boost to his electoral base.
With the aim of raising voters, Donald Trump caused controversy on Wednesday by launching the promise to send $5,000 (about 4,300 euros) to each citizen, if Republicans keep the majority in the House of Representatives and Senate, without giving further details about the measure.
He was quickly accused by the Democratic opposition of “desperate electoral bribe”.
The organization of the event today indicated that 20,000 people attended the first day of the convention – number close to the maximum capacity of the ‘American Airlines Center’ arena.
However, as on Wednesday, several upper sections of the arena were practically empty at the start of the rare political event.
Already the thousands of voters present do not hide enthusiasm, especially when Donald Trump is exalted on stage and the Democrats criticized.
In a speech that, for the first time at the convention, was focused on Islam, Republican Senator Ted Cruz said: “The law of Sharia does not take place in America”, and was widely applauded by the public after referring to the rigorous interpretation of Islamic law that imposes severe restrictions on women and girls.
Cruz also mentioned Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York, and warned that “we are witnessing a new and dangerous red-green alliance: communists and Islamists joining and taking over the Democratic Party”.
At today's event, there will be room for several tributes, such as the activist and ally of Donald Trump Charlie Kirk, murdered precisely a year ago in Utah, and the victims of the September 11, 2001.
Outside the arena, several protestors traveled the streets of Dallas near the convention site in protest against Donald Trump's government.
According to the New York Times, Dallas police arrested at least two people on site.
A Dallas Police Department spokesman later said that two protesters were arrested after assaulting a protester and blocking a street.
Traditionally, the National Conventions of the two major American parties (Republican and Democratic) take place only every four years, specifically in the summer months preceding the presidential elections, which makes this Republican event unprecedented.
Conventions usually serve for party delegates to formally vote for the White House candidate and approve the official party platform.
However, the Dallas Convention will not have any vote or nomination, serving as a showcase for Republican candidates competing for fierce elections to Congress.
The mid-term elections scheduled for November 3 will renew the entire House of Representatives (the lower chamber of the US Congress) and a third of the Senate.
If the Democrats regain control of one of the legislative chambers, they will have the power to block Trump's agenda and initiate investigations into his administration during the two missing years of his term.
