O scheme involved the systematic receipt of bribes from fraudulent ‘call centers’ and the laundering of the values obtained.

Vdovichenko delivered his letter of resignation today, according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, who cites as a source the head of the Attorney General's Information Department, Mariana Hajovska-Kovbasyuk.

The name of ‘number two’ of that body is no longer shown in the organisation chart on its website.

Vdovichenko's resignation comes after an operation last Friday, in which the Ukrainian Specialized Anti-Corruption Office (SAPO) and the National Anti-Corruption Office (NABU) dismantled a criminal organization led by the head of one of the divisions of the Attorney General's Office.

The group reportedly received systematically bribes from fraudulent ‘call centers’, laundered the money obtained and used extortion tactics to allow the unrestricted operation of clandestine ‘call centers’ that circumvented a large number of Ukrainian and foreign citizens.

The Supreme Court of Ukraine has decreed preventive detention on bail of 120 million hryvnias (about 2.32 million euros) for the deputy director of the Department of International Cooperation of the Attorney General’s Office, Serhi Kropiva.

He is accused of covering up the activities of fraudulent ‘call centers’, entities that have been the subject of a new anti-fraud legislation recently presented to parliament by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the context of the controversy surrounding the matter in the country.
