O outbreak of cyclosporiasis, caused by a parasite, already has almost 22,000 cases in the United States, according to the latest data presented by Today. Explosive diarrhea is one of the symptoms of this disease that has already caused the death of two people in the country. One of the food that is being associated with the problem is lettuce, specifically a served in the fast food restaurant. Still, there may be more food under suspicion.

Taylor Farms' lettuce, from central Mexico, supplied from the United States by Taco Bell was identified as the focus of cyclosporiasis contamination in 15 states. It was eventually removed from all restaurants and even from some supermarkets.

Food under suspicion beyond lettuce

According to food safety experts, there may be several sources of contamination that are likely to increase by the end of August. “There may be several non-related outbreaks occurring at the same time”Tell Today the microbiology professor Donald Schaffner.

After several interviews with people with symptoms it was noticed that the origin was in this lettuce of Taco Bell. However, other sources of contamination of cyclosporiasis may be likely.

North Carolina health authorities have revealed that parsley and fresh coriander are also being monitored. “Other brands, restaurants or distribution channels involved can be identified and cover other states.”

The professor of microbiology also reported on other foods that were the source of other outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in the United States. It is the cases of coriander, basil, raspberries, chives or peas.

Should I avoid lettuce and other foods?

“ As an immunologist and specialist in infectious diseases, I know that it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of infection by microbes that can contaminate food, such as Cyclopsora, E. coli and Salmonella,” Lisa Spoon tells The Conversation.

Instead of avoiding fresh products, adopting some sensible food safety practices can help significantly reduce the risk of getting sick, allowing you to continue to enjoy the many health benefits of fresh salads and vegetables.”

The expert reveals that during this outbreak washing fresh vegetables and vegetables that are packed and pre-washed is something you can do.

What is cyclosporiasis?

According to Clevelan Clinic, “cyclosporiasis is a disease caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis”, they begin by saying. “It causes watery diarrhea, sometimes explosive, and other problems, stomach and intestine infections. Generally, transmission occurs through contaminated water or food. Treatment is done with antibiotics”, they continue.

They reveal that the first symptoms of this food poisoning caused by a parasite may occur one week after ingestion. Without proper treatment, symptoms take time to disappear. They point out that this type of outbreak is something unusual in the United States and that it occurs more in tropical regions and areas where water treatment is not performed.

“Cyclospora infection may vary from mild to severe. The risk of serious infection is greater in people with weakened immune system. Children and the elderly may also have severe symptoms,” says Clevelan Clinic.
