Sis your cholesterol healthy? The truth is that values should be within a recommended range for this to happen. Are yours within this limit? Some doctors talk about this issue and what should be taken into account.
“Cholesterol is a silent risk factor. She can’t feel the accumulating in the arteries,” said nutritionist Lisa Young on the USAToday website. “The sooner you start paying attention to your cholesterol, the better your heart health will be in the long run,” he continues.
Bad cholesterol and advancing age
One of the main problems is related to LDL cholesterol, the so-called bad cholesterol, which can accumulate over time and be responsible for some more serious problems. It's something you should take into account with advancing age.

“Cholesterol levels generally increase with age, especially in middle age. In men, LDL levels tend to rise to around 60 years, gradually decreasing thereafter. In the case of women, cholesterol levels tend to remain lower than in men until menopause, around 50 to 55 years, when they increase and can exceed male levels”, added the specialist.
Thus, it is necessary to take into account some factors that may affect cholesterol and be boosting these changes in values. This is the case with aging, hormonal changes and increased fat in the abdominal area.
Cholesterol: How is it measured and what are the healthy values?
Lisa Young reveals that cholesterol is measured by a blood test. “The main names of cholesterol and fat in the blood you should pay attention to are LDL, HDL and triglycerides . Total cholesterol measures the combined amount of LDL, HDL and VLDL in the blood.”
In this way, in relation to lDL cholesterol, in a healthy adult the values should be below 100 mg/dL. However, if they are between 100 mg/dL and 129 mg/dL is considered ideal. On the other hand, high levels are anything and 160 mg/dL or higher.
For HDL, also known as good cholesterol, healthy levels are in 40 mg/dL or more for men and 50 mg/dL or more for women. Normal triglycerides are below 150 mg/dL, and high levels are 200 mg/dL or more.
A nutritionist left a warning for those with LDL 190 mg/dL or higher. “It is considered seriously high and is a warning signal, regardless of age or other risk factors. It is recommended to take immediate medicines.”
On the other hand, leave the warning to those who have the total cholesterol above 290 mg/dL. “You should consult your doctor to see the possibility of a genetic examination, especially if there is a family history of heart disease.”
