“ Dequate progressive and gradual access for different age groups” to social networks and other online platforms, said Ursula von der Leyen, in press statements after receiving an expert report on the measures that the EU can take to protect children on the internet.
“Just as we don’t give our children car keys before they have a driver’s license, or we don’t allow them to buy alcohol until they are legal age to do so, we should also establish the age from which children can legally access social networks”, said Von der Leyen.
After the summer, the Commission will present concrete proposals after studying the expert report, said the leader of the European executive, but stressing that it should allow access to screens up to 13 years of age under adult surveillance and limited time
From the age of 13, access to social networks will be gradually extended, but the age of users must be proven by platforms.
