O Council of Ilha das Flores unanimously issued an opinion against the preliminary proposal of the Plan and Budget of the Azores for 2027, for not considering the “needs” of the island of the Western group, it was released today.
In the opinion sent to the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), the Ilha das Flores Council, chaired by Carlos Silva, expects that the planning and financial programming instruments of the region “dequately reflect the specific needs of the island, contributing to improving the living conditions of the population, economic and social development and the necessary territorial cohesion”.
“ In this sense, the Ilha das Flores Council hopes that the next statutory visit will provide an opportunity for the Regional Government to examine, with due attention, the concerns presented and make concrete commitments to address the problems identified, as well as to ensure the financial means necessary for the implementation of the priority works for the island of Flores”, it says.
At the meeting where this body examined the preliminary proposal of the Plan and Budget of the Azores for 2027 it was also deliberate that, at the time of the Regional Government’s statutory visit to the island – which was scheduled for this week, but was postponed due to the ongoing strike of SATA’s ‘handling’ workers – the advisers hoped to “transmit and strengthen their concerns about a number of problems and needs that have been dragging on for several years, without finding a significant solution”.
“ The need will also be expressed to strengthen the financial allocations in the Regional Plan for some structural works for the development of the island of Flores, whose funds are clearly insufficient to ensure their timely implementation”, he said.
As the statutory visit was postponed, in another letter sent to the leader of the Azorean executive, the President of the Council of Ilha believes that the situation “should not constitute any impediment to the timely analysis of the proposals submitted [in a memorandum], and should receive due consideration from the Regional Government and be welcomed in the proposal for an Annual Regional Plan and Budget of the Autonomous Region of the Azores for 2027, through the inclusion of the investments and the funds necessary for the implementation of the interventions considered priority”.
The Ilha das Flores Council reaffirms its readiness to “continue to collaborate institutionally with the Regional Government, but hopes that the proposals presented will be properly considered and translated into concrete measures” in the next Plan and Budget of the region.
The pre-proposal for the Azores Plan for 2027 provides for an overall investment of EUR 1,057 million, EUR 650 million of the Regional Government’s “direct responsibility”.
The discussion and vote on the Plan and Budget of the Azores for 2027 will take place in November at the Regional Legislative Assembly, in the city of Horta, on the island of Faial.
