Prepairing the holidays can be intense, especially when there are numerous tasks. As far as safety is concerned, there are a number of things that experts in the area advise to do. Based on an article on Martha Stewart's website, we highlight seven.
1. Lock all entry points (not just doors)
Before going on holiday, book a few minutes to make a last check and take a walk around your house to inspect all possible entry points, including side doors, garage entrances, gates and first floor windows.
“ It is easy to focus only on the front door, but other areas can be equally important and are often forgotten by people when they are in a hurry to leave home,” says Sandra Yang Scirpo, SimpliSafe’s residential security specialist.
2. Check security devices
Before leaving home – and if so – check that security devices such as alarms and cameras are working.
“ Before leaving, make sure that the cameras are connected, loaded and not obstructed by objects such as plants or furniture”, says Scirpo. “If you have security cameras, make sure they are positioned to monitor the main entrances and any less visible areas of the street.”.
3. Make it look like you're home
A house that looks empty is an easy target for thieves. However, there are simple ways to look like the house is busy.
– Attention to orders: packages and accumulated correspondences are a revealing signal. If you're expecting a package, ask a friend or a neighbor to pick it up;
– Set the lights: program the internal and external lights so that they turn on and off at specific times;
– Park the car in the driveway: an empty garage entrance may indicate that there is no one at home.
4. Turn off the small plug appliances
Don't be fooled by your size. There are small appliances that are responsible for increased energy consumption. In addition, when connected, they may pose a security risk.
“ Before you go on vacation, turn off from the small home appliances and chargers that do not need to stay connected, such as kettles, toasters, hair modelers and portable heaters”, advises Nicholai Allen, fireman and founder of Safe Soss.
5. Test security alarms
Before you leave, test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide, advise Allen. To do so, simply press the test button continuously on each detector until it fires.
6. Remove still water
All appliances that carry water, such as electric kettles, coffee machines or others, should be empty and without water.
“The mold can develop in just 24 to 48 hours when there is moisture and organic matter present, so leaving areas that can remain wet can create contamination situations that will be difficult to solve when you return from vacation,” says Michael Rubino, an air quality specialist.
7. Close the water counter tap
In your absence, a flood could occur. This situation can be prevented if the water counter tap is closed.
