Othe United States has helped the countries of the Persian Gulf region export 1.5 billion barrels of oil through the Strait of Ormuz since summer, today revealed the US military command for the Middle East (CENTCOM).
In a communication shared on social network X, CENTCOM also revealed that more than 3,000 commercial ships successfully crossed the Strait of Ormuz, 95% of which “were able to navigate with complete security,” bypassing the Iranian blockade.
Iran has claimed control of the Ormuz Strait since the end of February at the beginning of the Middle East war on 28 February with the US and Israeli attacks on Tehran.
The Islamic Republic requires that ships obtain authorization to cross the strait, through which one fifth of world oil exports were transiting before the war.
On February 28, the United States and Israel attacked Iran, resulting in the death of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as high military officers.
In reprisal, Iran carried out attacks on US interests in the region and against Israel, while restricting access to the Strait of Ormuz, a strategic route for global energy supply.
Washington responded by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports, damaging the country's oil exports and trade.
A ceasefire agreement, which aimed to put an end to hostilities in mid-June, failed, with both sides respectively accusing each other of violating their terms.
Since then, the United States has carried out sporadic attacks on Iranian targets, while Iran has started attacking ships trying to cross the strait without its permission.
On social network X, Admiral Brad Cooper of CENTCOM wrote that “the main navigation routes of the Strait of Ormuz remain free of any Iranian mines, thanks to the notable efforts” of the US presence.
