ANDalthough it is not the most common scenario, during the holiday period your refrigerator may have some problems and simply stop working.
When this happens, there is a risk of the food spoiling and leaving unpleasant odors in the fridge, which are usually difficult to remove.
Given this, there is a trick that can prevent the spread of these odors: the coffee tarts.
According to a Tasting Table article, coffee lees can help neutralize odors in the fridge. In case of an emergency, it helps to neutralize unpleasant odors if food stored in the freezer is damaged.
For maximum absorption of the smell, spread dried coffee on a tray or dish and leave it in the refrigerator or freezer.
Why do coffee dregs work
The power to eliminate coffee lees is due to its naturally porous structure and high nitrogen content. Nitrogen neutralizes sulfur compounds, one of the main responsible for food deterioration odors.
So if the food gets spoilt and the odors persist inside the freezer, the coffee dust can be used to fight the strongest smells.
After cleaning the refrigerator you should spread the coffee lees on a tray and place it at the bottom of the freezer. With this, a series of molecules will be absorbed.
Then just keep the freezer running normally between 2 to 3 days. The smell of spoiled food will be replaced by a light coffee aroma, which can be removed with water and detergent.
The same technique can be applied to the refrigerator. Just put the dregs inside a breathable container, like a cloth bag or packaging covered with kitchen paper, and leave it from the appliance.
