A Olaria de Barcelos and the Embroidery of Crevo de São Miguel da Carreira, in the same municipality, were registered in the Union Registry of Geographical Indications of Artisan and Industrial Products, thus obtaining European protection, announced today the municipality.
In a statement, the municipality of Braga district adds that the decisions issued by the European Union Intellectual Property Institute (EUIPO) on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, establish January 7, 2026 as the beginning of the protection of the two denominations.
The date of 7 January corresponds to the day on which Portugal notified the European Commission of its intention to register the names.
“ The registration represents another step in safeguarding Barcelos's artisanal heritage, contributing to the valorization of two traditions related to cultural identity and knowledge of the municipality ", reads in the communiqué of the municipality.
The communiqué states that this recognition is also an instrument to enhance the notoriety of the Pottery of Barcelos and the Embroidery of the S. Miguel da Carreira Crevo, promoting its dissemination in the European area.
“ After the Figure of Barcelos, whose entry in the Register of the European Union was decided in August this year, these two handcrafted productions also benefit from the European regime for the protection of geographical indications, reinforcing the affirmation of Barcelos’ artisanal heritage in the European space”, concludes the statement.
