A Apple filed last Friday, the 10th, a lawsuit against OpenAI where she accuses the company of stealing trade secrets. The technology of Cupertino holds that former workers have stolen confidential information “to benefit OpenAI”.
The case concerns the OpenAI hardware division and the fact that you hired some Apple employees.
Among those cited by the process are Tang Tan, who worked as vice president of product design at Apple and was linked to the departments responsible for iPhone and Apple Watch. Tang Tan left Apple in February 2024 and joined OpenAI.
Another former Apple employee quoted in this process is Chang Liu, who worked for eight years at Apple as an electrotechnic system engineer and decided to leave the company in January 2026 to later join OpenAI.
Apple mentions in the process that in February this year, it contacted OpenAI on the subject for an investigation. However, Apple claims that the Artificial Intelligence company never responded to the request.
“At Apple, our teams are constantly developing revolutionary technologies to create the best products and services in the world and protect their work and intellectual property is something we take very seriously”, can be read in the statement sent by Apple to site 9to5mac. “ Recently, we have obtained significant evidence that suggests that individuals hired by OpenAI have improperly appropriated secret and confidential Apple information regarding our technologies, processes and products still to be launched. We will always defend the hard work and innovations created by our teams and are taking all the appropriate steps to do so.”.
The process in question deserved an official answer from OpenAI. OpenAI's communications officer, Drew Pusateri, published on the social network where he stated that the company had no interest in making use of Apple's business secrets.
“Our statement in response to this process: We have no interest in the business secrets of other companies. We remain focused on developing innovative technology that gives more power to people everywhere”, can be read in the publication shared by OpenAI executive.
It is important to remember that OpenAI's hardware division is developing products in collaboration with Jony Ive – the former Apple designer responsible for some of the most iconic products of the Apple Company, including iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, among others.
OpenAI has not yet launched on the market any of the products developed by this division. However, Apple seeks with this process not only to be compensated for damages, but also an injunction with OpenAI.
Our status in response to this suit: We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere. https://t.co/lIxGW6hyz5
