A sole fishing will reopen on 1 November and Portugal will have available a quota of 85 tons by the end of the year, today revealed the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea.
“In total, given the excess use of the quota initially defined for the sole and the value of the remaining two species that is still available, Portugal has a total of 85 tons of sole for the months of November and December 2026, at which time this fishery is especially valued,” said José Manuel Fernandes.
Legitimate sole fishing ended on 19 June and since then the government has been negotiating reopening.
The final proposal in Brussels was adopted today at the Agrifish Council and contains a 44.4 tonnes increase for Portugal by the end of the year.
According to the Government, this figure includes greater flexibility for sole between November and December, a total of 24.4 tonnes for Portugal and a 20-tonne increase for other species of sole that make up the Portuguese quota.
“ The result is a persistent negotiation by Portugal and a determined defence of national interests with the European institutions, based on political dialogue coupled with rigorous technical work,” the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea stressed.
