O prime Minister of Cape Verde, Francisco Carvalho, today congratulated Lula da Silva on the victory in the second round of the presidential elections in Brazil and the prospect of deepening relations.
“It is with great satisfaction that the Government of Cape Verde sees this re-election of President Lula da Silva”, he said, from the Netherlands, where he completes the last three days of a visit.
Carvalho told journalists that “Cabo Verde and Brazil have historical ties of friendship that come from a long time” and that he intends to “take this moment to deepen relations and develop new areas of cooperation”.
The Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves, who suspended his duties to run for a second term in the November 15 elections, also congratulated Lula da Silva for his victory.
In a video posted on Facebook, Neves recalled that Pedro Álvares Cabral passed by Cape Verde on his way to Brazil to say that the election Sunday “was a moment of rediscovery”.
“ It was a moment of redefinition of Brazil for democracy, for freedoms, for inclusive growth, for social justice,” he said.
“ I congratulate Lula da Silva for this vibrant victory of Brazil, democracy and the progressive world ", concluded.
Lula da Silva won with about 51.7% the second round of Brazil's presidential elections against Flávio Bolsonaro.
Lula's first two terms as President of Brazil were between 2003 and 2011.
The Head of State, who will assume his fourth term on January 5, became the first President in the history of Brazil to be elected on four different occasions.
