Dand look at eclipse? Then note that an instant of dazzlement can cost a lifetime of vision.

Although total blindness is very rare to develop during phenomena like this, experts point out that observation of an eclipse may result in a partial loss of vision – and there is a phenomenon that can contribute to this, so it is important that you take some care.

What could have negative effects on vision during the eclipse?

The phenomenon is fascinating, but NASA experts have already spoken about the risks. However, if you have glasses to observe the phenomenon, you can rest easy.

Due to rarity of the solar eclipse, it is also quite common to drag crowds into the street – and not to lose the milimetric alignment of passage of the Moon between Earth and the Sun, the popular want to have the glasses that allow to see this complete blocking of light – what is pretty sensible and mandatory!

Nevertheless, if you do not purchase glasses in time, the search for these glasses is likely to increase and will run out on some commercial surfaces. In some cases these stock breaks may still lead to the sale of inadequate glasses. This is where the problem begins.

“Inundation” of counterfeit glasses

Mark Margolis, manufacturer of sunscreens, alerts for “flooding” of counterfeit glasses and tells Inside Edition to look at the Sun with this type of uncertified glasses “may cause a retinal burn”.

In a CBS News report, astronomer Rick Fienberg of the American Astronomical Society and NASA scientist Alex Young make it clear that the damage caused by this type of “false glasses can be permanent”.

To People magazine, the American Astronomical Society clarifies that the problem of these fake glasses is that “they do not block visible and infrared UV radiation, exposing the user to serious eye lesions and permanent blindness”, which can affect activities such as reading or driving.

To avoid this type of risk, experts suggest that you look for the glasses in advance and at the time of acquiring them you should check these NASA safety recommendations:

  • Glasses shall indicate “ISO 12312-2”;
  • Shall not be used if they are scratched, wrinkled or degraded;
  • Common sunglasses don't replace glasses for eclipses.
