A Maritime Police today rescued at the end of the afternoon 35 immigrants who were on a vessel south of the island of Gavdos, Greece, under the mission “Joint Operation (OJ) Greece 2026”, revealed the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
In a statement, the AMN states that the interception of the vessel took place following a request for intervention by the Greek authorities, and immigrants were “later transported to the port of Karave, where they waited for the competent authorities”.
This afternoon, AMN had announced the rescue of 43 other immigrants, who were isolated on a beach on Gravos Island.
After the rescue, these immigrants were transported by the Maritime Police to the port of Karave, where they waited for the competent authorities, still according to the AMN.
The Maritime Police is in Greece as part of the Joint Operation (OJ) mission Greece 2026, coordinated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), in support of the Hellenic Coast Guard, which aims to contribute to “the surveillance of the European Union’s external maritime border and operational response to situations that endanger human life at sea”.
