O prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, congratulated Brazilian President Lula da Silva on re-election and advocated strengthening bilateral relations to boost trade, protect the environment and increase the prosperity of both countries.
“ Relations between Canada and Brazil have progressed thanks to our partnership. Let us take this opportunity to further strengthen them”, Carney wrote in a message published this Sunday on social network X.
Lula won this Sunday the second round of the presidential elections in Brazil with 51.78% of the votes, against 48.22% of the far-right senator Flavio Bolsonaro, according to the official results, after scrutinized 99.98% of the votes.
It is the first time since the end of the military dictatorship (1964-1985) that a candidate who took second place in the first round manages to defeat the opponent in the second.
In the first round, Bolsonaro was the most voted, with 47% of the votes, plus two percentage points than the progressive leader, a difference of 2.2 million votes.
After the results were known, the re-elected President stated that his victory represents a “loss of lies and denialism” and promised to carry out “the best mandate a President has ever made in this country.”.
For his part, Bolsonaro said it was “impossible to recognize” Lula’s victory and announced that he will ask for the annulment of the elections, questioning a judge’s decision to extend the voting time for two hours at the request of the head of state.
