A situation in Praça D. João I, in Porto, which has been the stage of the camp for housing since October 10, was calm by midnight, with more than 200 people talking, after a popular assembly that filled the space.
More than 200 people talked in small groups, with no visible presence of police forces.
Only one food stand is still in operation, the so-called popular canteen, and only some posters are visible to contest the housing policy and others with reference to the performance of the PSP on the eve.
The PSP dispersed on Sunday morning, with batonada and with the use of dogs, demonstrations for the right to housing in Lisbon and Porto, after more than two hours of tension and orders for people to leave and tents to be removed.
The demonstrators did not follow orders, invoking the constitutional right to the demonstration.
According to the PSP, there were 33 injured and 31 detained for disobedience. In a statement, camp organizations reported dozens of wounded.
The protesters demand the reversal of the new rental law, the end of demolitions and evictions without an alternative housing, a stop to the purchase of housing by real estate funds, the increase in public housing, the recovery of vacant buildings for housing purposes and ceilings “truely accessible” to income.
The leftist parties criticized the police intervention, asking for clarification from the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and the intervention of the President of the Republic, António José Seguro. The PSD, a government party, and the Aquida defended police action.
