The Portuguese Artificial Intelligence (IA) model Amália will help the Navy military make faster decisions, without neglecting the human factor, and avoiding exposure of classified or sensitive data, today it has advanced the branch.

A Navy answered questions asked by the Lusa agency, after the Prime Minister and President of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, had advanced at the 43rd Party Congress in June, that Amália – presented today – would “support more critical operations, such as in the Armed Forces, in the Navy in particular”.
The Armada pointed out that Amália is the “first large-scale language model developed specifically for European Portuguese” and that it is being integrated “in the artificial intelligence tool Marinheiro de Silicone”, currently being developed by the branch in partnership with NOVA FCT, “as one of the great language models available on the platform”.
Asked about how this model can be used in practice by the military, the branch pointed out that the integration of Amália into the Silicon Seaman will enable the Navy’s military and civilians to provide an “intelligent assistant” capable of supporting “research, analysis and information processing activities in safe environments, reducing the time needed to perform knowledge-intensive tasks and increasing process efficiency.”.
“ This support is particularly relevant when it concerns classified, sensitive or mission-critical information, whose nature prevents the use of public artificial intelligence platforms,” the branch said.
The Navy expects this tool to support “processes of planning, preparation, conduct of operations and post-mission analysis, enabling the research and exploration of relevant information to accelerate, synthesize large volumes of data and support the preparation of information products for the decision-making process”.
The branch emphasized, however, that “the goal is not to replace the human decision, but to provide processed and contextualized information that allows commanders and major states to decide more quickly and more informedly.”.
“ The tool will be able to support the military in the rapid consultation of technical documentation, procedures, directives and lessons learned, produce operational information syntheses, support the translation of documentation, structure knowledge and facilitate the preparation of reports and products to support command”, is listed.
In situations that require “rapid analysis and decision making”, the platform may “significantly reduce the time needed to locate, organize and present relevant information, contributing to increase situational knowledge and support command and control functions, always keeping the human decision maker responsible for the final decision,” the Navy insisted.
The integration of Amália in the Silicon Seaman “is part of the Navy’s strategy to strengthen technological sovereignty and ensure that sensitive information processing can be carried out in controlled environments without dependence on external services”.
“ After its consolidation, the technological architecture developed within the Mariner of Silicon may constitute a reference that can be adopted by other entities of the Public Administration, the Armed Forces and the security forces and services, provided they have the necessary computational infrastructure ", added the branch in response to Lusa.
