Uthe Brazilian woman died last Wednesday, October 21, during her honeymoon in Portugal. According to her husband, 29-year-old Amanda Nascimento, she felt bad about a food allergy after having lunch at a shellfish farmer in Leiria.
Amanda and Tiago Nascimento married on October 10th and decided to spend the honeymoon in Portugal. On Wednesday, they went to lunch at a restaurant in Leiria and Amanda, a professional nurse, ate panada squid thinking it was fish, despite knowing from childhood that she was allergic to shellfish.
“ Without knowing exactly what was being served, he took a piece and put it in his mouth. When you felt that blurry texture, you realized it wasn't an ordinary fish. Only, at that moment, she had already swallowed, so we tried not to despair”, said James, adding that they did not have any anti-allergics available.
Amanda immediately felt a slight discomfort in her throat, which eventually passed after drinking water.
“ We followed normally without realizing that that could be the beginning of a much more serious reaction. But in two hours, everything changed. We were leaving a bookstore when the symptoms began to appear, around 4:30 p.m.”, added the husband.
Suddenly, Amanda started getting spots and swelling on her skin and felt her throat closing. He was still assisted by an emergency team, but had to be transferred to the University Hospital Center of Coimbra.
“The ambulance arrived and did the first aid, but in that unit [in Leiria] it did not have the necessary support. She then had to be transferred to the University Hospital of Coimbra, a little further away, and unfortunately did not resist”, said Tiago.
“It’s 10 years of history as boyfriends. We met in the parish. It is very difficult to lose it just when we were going to start a new story, now as husband and wife”i'm sorry.
The man described Amanda, a nurse at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Mantevida Taguatinga, in Brasilia, as “an extraordinary person, a sweet, humble woman who has always cared for everyone”.
“ Nurse, I loved her profession and she was very Catholic. She died doing what she liked most, which was traveling ", said.
