O executive Secretariat of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) today congratulated Lula da Silva on his re-election as President of Brazil, reaffirming his commitment to defending the principles based on fraternity and democratic values.

In a press release, the Executive Secretariat of the CPLP congratulates the Brazilian people for the great turnout and reiterates “the commitment to defend the historical principles and ideals affirmed by the peoples, based on fraternity, on the defense of common causes and democratic values, as well as on the achievement of the objectives desired for peace, humanism and progress”

In the same note, the organization highlights the commitment to mutual cooperation and collaboration in all areas “which unite governments and sister societies in the Community”, wishing Lula “the greatest successes in the performance of its noble mission”.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected for a new term from 2027 to 2030 with 51.79% of the votes after the second presidential round defeating the opposition candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, who obtained 48.21% of the votes.

In the second round, disputed on Sunday, the former worker and trade unionist of the Workers' Party (PT) managed to reverse, in an unprecedented way, the disadvantage of the first round in relation to the son of Jair Bolsonaro.

Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), said that he does not recognize the defeat and will call for the cancellation of the elections, criticising the extension of the closing deadline of the polls for two hours, decided following the denunciation of public transport problems that have damaged the mobility of voters.

Lula da Silva is finishing the third presidential term, for which he was elected in 2022, when he defeated the then President-in-Office Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving house arrest for attempted coup.

Lula's first two terms as President of the Republic of Brazil were between 2003 and 2011.

Lula's inauguration in the new mandate is scheduled for January 5, 2027.
