Vthere are dozens of people protesting today against the eviction of a young mother, widow, and of the two children of a municipal housing in the District of the County, in the Lisbon parish of Marvila, on a solidarity vigil on the spot.
Along with the vigil was the Campada de Lisboa movement, which shouts slogans like “people are not garbage to be dumped”.
“Casas yes, evictions no”, “habitation is a right, without it done nothing”, “Moudas listens, the people are in struggle” and “evicted people and empty houses” also shout the protesters next to the municipal housing where the young woman and children under 4 and 2 years old were evicted.
At the microphone, a spokesperson for the Lisbon Camp defended the need to continue protesting for the right to housing: “For each eviction, 1,000 occupations. For each eviction, 1,000 camped.”
Organized by the Marvila Committee of Residents and Users (COMUM), this popular mobilization initiative arises in protest against the decision of the Lisbon City Council (CML) and Gebalis – a company that manages municipal housing – to maintain the eviction of this family, which took place at the end of July, “without any solution or guarantee of alternative housing”.
The protesters also raise posters with slogans: “Shame: mother and children evicted without dignified solutions!”, “People evicted and so much empty house!”, “CML cannot be an eviction agency!” and “Everyone has the right, for himself and his family, to an adequate housing, in conditions of hygiene and comfort (...) – article 65 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”.
On Thursday evening, the Lisbon Camp for housing, which has been concentrated since Saturday in Rossio Square, decided to travel today to Marvila to participate in the vigil against the eviction of this young mother and her children.
The young woman lived in a townhouse in Marvila, where she paid her rent and tried to regulate the lease, following the death of the two owners of the house, the companion and father of the children and his grandmother, who died in 2024.
