The EUJJ decision thus rejects Google’s appeal to a ruling of the EU General Court which had still reduced the initial fine of the EU executive from EUR 4,342 billion to EUR 4,125 billion.
Google’s parent company Alphabet has to pay EUR 1,520 billion of the fine.
In 2018, the European Commission concluded that the multinational abused its dominant position by having imposed, including through pre-installation agreements and licensing conditions for certain applications, the promotion of its Google Search search engine and its Chrome browser on mobile devices that work with the Android operating system, also from Google.
This amount is the highest fine applied so far by Brussels in a case of breach of competition rules.
The spokesman of the European Commission for Competition, Ricardo Cardoso, indicated at the daily press conference that the Community executive takes note of the decision “which rejects Google’s full appeal against the judgment of the General Court of September 2022”.
He also said that the Commission will now carefully examine this morning's judgment and the 8,585 pages of the case.
