Os rebels Huthis claimed today to have attacked Aden, the main southern city in which the Saudi Arabia-backed government is based, after accusing Riyadh of carrying out air strikes that killed 16 people in areas they control.
“ Our armed forces targeted the Saudi enemy in the so-called ‘Al-Nasr’ camp and the Aden naval base,” said military spokesman Huthi, Yahya Saree, indicating that these sites were under the control of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia.
The pro-Iran fighters attacked Aden several times in recent weeks, including the presidential palace, according to the France-Presse agency.
The Yemeni Government's Interior Ministry said that today's attack hit the coast guard headquarters and a second building elsewhere, according to news agency Saba. However, it did not mention the naval base, located near the airport.
The television channel Al-Masirah, controlled by the Huthis, had already reported “a series of attacks by the Saudi enemy against the capital Sanaa” and “about twenty attacks since this morning” against the port city of Mokha.
The station pointed out at least four deaths in Sanaa in an attack on a house and “several dead and wounded” in a cement factory in Hamdan district near the capital.
The district health director told Al-Masirah that six women and one child were killed in the second attack, which, he added, targeted the housing of the cement factory workers.
According to the Huthis in Hodeida, a Saudi attack killed five members of the same family.
In Saudi Arabia, the coalition that supports the Yemeni Government announced today that it intercepted three ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh and the cities in western Taif and Yanbu, a major oil terminal in the Red Sea, as well as a drone in an eastern province.
Two explosions were heard in the capital early this morning and Saudi Civil Defense issued a series of alerts, quickly suspended, urging residents to seek shelter, including those in the Mecca region, where the most sacred place in Islam is located, said AFP.
Both sides have conducted air strikes almost daily since the conflict in Yemen began in July, which began in 2014.
In September, the Huthis, which control large extensions of territory, including the Sanaa capital, took control of the Yemeni Red Sea coast, and in early October intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting oil and airport infrastructure. In the middle of the month they carried out one of the most deadly attacks in the kingdom in years, which reached Riyadh International Airport.
The war in Yemen has already caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in one of the poorest countries in the world, which is facing a serious humanitarian crisis.
