O parliamentary group of the PCP today required the holding of an urgent parliamentary debate on police action in the early hours of November 1 in Lisbon and Porto, which said it was generating “a lot of indignation”.

“Despite the process of specialising in the State Budget, the Assembly of the Republic must assume its responsibilities of monitoring the activity of the Government, in particular, in the face of a situation that is generating a huge indignation in Portuguese society,” the PCP argued, in a press release.

In this sense, and in view of the “gravity of events”, the PCP requested the president of the Assembly of the Republic to mark a “conference of leaders for the convening of a plenary meeting and scheduling an urgent debate on police activity in the early hours of November 1 in Lisbon and Porto”.

For the CFP, the “gravity of events requires clarification and the clearance of the political responsibilities of the repressive action underway” and requires the Assembly of the Republic “not to remain indifferent to what has happened”.

The party pointed out “the government’s insistence on refusing solutions and limiting freedoms, including the right to demonstration” and the “gravity of police action in Lisbon and Porto in the repression of citizens who peacefully manifested themselves by the right to housing”.

The CFP lamented what it classified as “a disproportionate and violent intervention by the security forces”, stressing that this happened “after a prosecutor from the Public Prosecutor’s Office came to the public to state that putting tents in the squares is neither illegal nor illegal”.

Practically at the same time, starting at 4:30 today, the Public Security Police advanced on the protesters concentrated in the camps in Lisbon and Porto to demobilize, removing tents and holding 13 people, with several wounded, including police.

In Lisbon, just minutes after the start of the police load of PSP, with petards and batonadas, Praça D. Pedro V was empty. The protesters were kicked out by the various accesses to Rossio.

In Porto, PSP destroyed the camp set up in Praça D. João I. The protesters resisted, shouting that their action was peaceful as the police force advanced, using batons and dogs, pushing them to Dr. Magellan Street Lemos.

INEM attended 25 people in protests in Lisbon and Porto

Twenty-five people were assisted following the camped by the right to housing in Lisbon and Porto, of which nine were transported to hospital units, today Lusa revealed the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
