O U.S. War Department released another batch of reports on unidentified abnormal phenomena (UAP), including several reports of Unidentified Flying Objects (OVNI) sightings on California Island.
The documents released on Friday, which date mainly back to the middle of the last century, detail several sightings on Catalina Island, which belongs to Los Angeles County.
One of the reports, of August 28, 1952, describes the report by a group of Boy Scouts, who claimed to have seen a “silver - colored object” moving “faster than a conventional jet plane”, while making a tour of an island mountain in June of that year.
The account states that the sky was clean, without clouds or wind.
The witnesses declared that they could not determine the altitude, speed or distance at which the object was located; it went up quickly before disappearing.
To this report, a handwritten letter is added by an islander, dated May 1947, in which another alleged sighting is described.
“ Around 8 p.m. on April 28th, my wife and a teacher saw six objects in the sky; they were not grouped together, but appeared in isolation. A few minutes later, after arriving at my daughter’s house — located on the next street on the same block — she, my daughter and my grandson saw another four. All of them moved in the same direction”, reports the letter. The United States Air Force concluded that the incident “carried out sufficient data for its evaluation” according to an observation included in the same letter.
Another report, dated November 1953, notes the sighting of a “round object, white-violacean” on Catalina Island. According to the document, the object remained still before moving “northwestward toward Los Angeles for about 10 minutes”, without altering its horizontal trajectory.
The disqualified documents also include the report of two American military personnel who claim to have seen a mysterious black triangular object flying at an extraordinarily high speed over a sensitive facility in the west of the country earlier this year.
In February, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered the disclosure of all information available to the government about UFOs and the search for extraterrestrial life beyond planet Earth.
Many voices criticized this Trump administration initiative, arguing that it makes public a material that does not bring new lights on the possible existence of extraterrestrial life and creates a distraction at a troubled time for Casa Blanca — marked by tension with Iran and by unfavourable polls to Republicans for the mid-November elections.
