A Public Security Police (PSP) today asked BE deputy Fabian Figueiredo for help so that people concentrated in Praça do Rossio would remove tents without the need for police intervention, but without success.

After the police cordon was formed at 1:30 p.m. from the old time, BE’s deputy appeared in Rossio Square to “avoid violence tonight”, having been questioned by the commander of the Metropolitan Command of Lisbon of PSP Iúri Rodrigues, who asked him for help.

In response, blogger Fabian Figueiredo said he was always available to help, but questioned: “What is the need to intervene with this police device against a peaceful occupation of public space?”

The BE deputy asked the PSP to demobilize, having Commander Iúri Rodrigues answered: “ We'll demobilize when people dismantle the tents.”

“ The one who decides to dismantle the tents is the one who set them up”, advanced BE’s elected, referring the decision to the campaign promoters.

Fabian Figueiredo also said that “there is no reason to repress” people who protest for housing in the Lisbon Camp and reinforced that the police device “is completely disproportionate”.

“ What is the need to mobilize the intervention body, dogs, people armed to the teeth”, questioned.

The PSP had on site elements of the Special Police Unit, Intervention Teams Quick and dogs from the Cinotechnic Operational Group (GOC).

Moments later, the PSP commander asked Fabian Figueiredo to get out of his face, when he addressed the hundreds of protesters, having the bloquist appealed that “dialogue instead of repress”.

At 1:52 p.m., the PSP issued a final warning for protesters to withdraw their tents.

“ This is the last warning. Carry out the order of dispersion”, it was heard in Rossio.

In response, the hundreds of protesters shouted “the united people will never be defeated” and “houses yes, evictions no”. There were moments of tension during the morning, and in Lisbon and Porto several wounded and dozens of detainees were recorded.

Before tonight's camp, thousands of people participated in the demonstration “We don’t have a home, we put up tents!”, who left the Marquis de Pombal, in the direction of Praça do Rossio, where, since Saturday, the Campada de Lisboa has gathered every day, except for Friday that concentrated in the District of the County, to demand measures to resolve the housing crisis.

In concrete demands to the Government, the Lisbon Camp aims to reverse the rental law, the end of demolitions and evictions without alternative housing and to stop the purchase of housing by real estate funds.

In addition, the increase in public housing, the application of roofs to rents – truly accessible, as well as the public initiative to recover returned buildings for housing purposes, is also required.

Between demonstrations and so-called camped demonstrations, with hundreds or thousands of protesters, the current protests against the housing crisis began in Porto on October 10 and expanded to Lisbon, but they have also motivated concentrations in other cities, days after the parliamentary approval of the new rental law, now under discussion in the specialty.

The initiatives, promoted by civic movements and spread across social networks, demand measures that respond to the crisis in the sector, the control of the prices of essential goods and fuels and defend taxes on the extraordinary profits of large companies in the banking sector.

On October 15, the protesting movement in Porto, with a camp, denounced a violent police charge during the early hours that caused injuries in 39 of the participants, two of whom were in a serious state, and in a police officer. In Lisbon, the authorities removed dozens of Rossio tents early in the morning of Tuesday and held 55 demonstrators, who will be present to judge on 27.

Protest promoters promise to stay on the streets.
